Federer vs Tsonga: Fed to show greatness at US Open and win 3-0

Published:

Roger Federer may have lost his last two meetings with Jo Wilfried Tsonga, but the Swiss star can gain a measure of the revenge with victory in the quarter finals of the US Open.

This is the second Grand Slam in succession that the pair will meet in the last eight, with Tsonga battling back from two sets down at Wimbledon to triumph.

He then proved that this success was no fluke when beating Federer again in Montreal last month, in another match that went to a deciding set.

Tsonga is 2/1 in the US Open tennis odds to complete the hat-trick over Federer and if his powerful serve and strong forehand are on song then he may prove tough to stop.

Although Federer is unable to match Tsonga in terms of power, he has lost nothing in terms of shot-making skill and ability to hit winners from all over the court.

More unforced errors have crept into his game in recent years, but he is still arguably the best player in the sport in terms of the pure quality of his shots when he decides to turn it on.

Federer was close to this level when demolishing Juan Monaco in a little more than an hour in the fourth round and if he plays to this level again then even the likes of Novak Djokovic may struggle to stop him winning a 17th Grand Slam.

The fact that Tsonga had to go through a gruelling five sets with Mardy Fish in the last round will not help his cause and Federer looks the more likely winner at 2/5.

Set Betting

Most people will feel that this could be another five-set classic, but with Federer having a point to prove, he could blast Tsonga off the court.

Remember he won the first two sets at Wimbledon and had a break in the third before seemingly falling to pieces.

Federer is 15/8 to beat Tsonga in straight sets, while a 3-1 victory could be good value at 5/2.
