Bronterre the one to beat in Dewhurst at Newmarket
Published:Bronterre may be taking a major step up in class to tackle the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket, but the positive comments from trainer Richard Hannon means that he should be considered the horse to beat.
Hannon was impressed with the final preparations of his two-year-old ahead of arriving at Ascot and this has resulted in him being backed into a 3/1 co-favourite to win the Dewhurst.
Bronterre has not run beyond Listed company so far, but could not have been more impressive when winning the Peter Willett Stakes at Goodwood.
He was not asked any serious questions until the final furlong and then quickly asserted to pull clear of useful yardsticks Justineo and Nayarra.
Although, Bronterre will have to step up for this victory he could be a very smart horse in the making.
Aidan O’Brien’s Power is the best horse based on the current official ratings taking part in the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket, but there some doubts about his true ability.
Many will point to his Group One National Stakes victory at the Curragh as proof of his capabilities, but there are reasons to suggest this was a weak renewal.
Meanwhile, he has also had a relatively busy campaign and the Dewhurst may be one race too many.
Power is one of the other 3/1 co-favourites in the Newmarket odds, with the final member of the trio being Ektihaab.
Like Bronterre, Ektihaab is unbeaten in two starts and is awaiting his first run in Group company.
Ektihaab is looking to tread the same path as Frankel to Dewhurst victory, but the one question mark is that he may not have beaten much in winning his two races.
Therefore, he may find Bronterre too good and have to settle for second spot.
