Spain vs Scotland: injury-hit Scots face uphill task in Alicante
Published:Kenny Miller and Craig Mackail-Smith look set to miss Scotland’s crucial game against Spain tomorrow evening.
Miller was also missing for their 1-0 win over Liechtenstein at the weekend, but was more than ably deputised by Brighton striker Mackail-Smith who scored the only goal on his first international start.
However, he has since complained of a hamstring injury and is considered doubtful for their game against the reigning World and European champions.
Scotland boss Craig Levein said: “I’ll need to wait and see how he is, which I’m a little worried about. If he plays, he plays – if not, I’ll just need to pick somebody else.
“It’s something that flares up every now and again with Craig but he managed to get through the game on Saturday night and he only mentioned it afterwards.
“He said it was a bit stiff but hopefully he’s all right. We’ll just need to wait and see.”
Scotland were hardly convincing in their win against Liechtenstein and are currently one point ahead of the Czech Republic in the Group I play-off spot, having played the same amount of games.
The Scots head into the Spain game as huge outsiders at 14/1 against a team who have yet to drop a point in their qualifying campaign.
With Spain having conceded just five goals in their seven games so far in qualifying it’s going to be a tough ask for the striker-less Scotland to break down the Spain resistance – even if they manage to get hold of the ball.
Spain are 1/5 to get the win and complete their perfect campaign.
