Strictly Come Dancing: Savage controversy won’t harm chances

| 02.11.2011

Robbie Savage was never shy of controversy on the football pitch and his ability to ruffle feathers appears to have transferred to the dancefloor.

Savage ended his Michael Jackson-inspired paso doble on Saturday night by jumping up on the judge’s desk and grabbing his crotch in front of Craig Revel Horwood.

His thrusting was deemed rather too obscene by some viewers and 267 complaints were made to the BBC.

Quite how Savage grabbing his crotch is more worrying to certain people than the sight of Russell Grant in spandex is another matter but, for now, Savage can console himself with the fact he is 9/1 fifth favourite to win the competition.

Savage has remained defiant in the face of the complaints – 267 from the 11.5million viewers isn’t exactly a backlash anyway – and the added publicity will not harm his chances of progressing to the latter stages of the show.

Meanwhile, former stand-alone favourite Jason Donovan has slipped to joint favourite in the betting with McFly drummer Harry Judd at 2/1.

Jason had been favourite up until the weekend’s dances but has drifted slightly – despite top scoring with a series high of 37 points.

Harry is rapidly improving and was awarded a perfect ten by Alesha Dixon – the first of this season – in week four.

The smitten judge gave the drummer another perfect score for last week’s Halloween-inspired Tango and the huge McFly fan base will surely make sure their man is around in the later rounds.

There looks to be a lot more to come from Harry and a punt on him to win at 2/1 could yield a very tidy payout.
