Inspiring O’Neill gives Sunderland a chance against Chelsea

| 11.01.2012

Chelsea’s miserable few months means they are almost certainly out of the title race and are now fighting simply to stay in the Champions League – and Sunderland can add to their worries this weekend.

The Blues are currently 50/1 to win the Premier League after winning just one of their previous five league games and now face the unenviable task of welcoming an in-form Sunderland side to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea may be the big 4/11 favourites to win the game but there is plenty to suggest the Black Cats can get something out of the clash.

The last time these sides met at Stamford Bridge, the Blues were going through a similarly dismal spell and they succumbed to a 3-0 hammering.

There is also the considerable impact that Martin O’Neill has had on the North East side since he took charge to consider.

Ever since their last minute win against Blackburn Rovers in his first game in charge back in December, Sunderland have been in excellent form and their only defeat since then came in a 1-0 loss against high-flying Tottenham Hotspur six games ago.

There is further good news for Sunderland when you look at Chelsea’s defensive home record.

Far from being the fortress it has been in recent seasons, Stamford Bridge has been breached many times this term and the Blues have kept just one clean sheet in their opening nine Premier League home games.

With Sunderland hitting six in their last two games combined, it could be another difficult afternoon for John Terry and Co.

Sunderland are currently 8/1 to get the win but a more attractive bet may be to back the Black Cats to sneak a draw at 7/2 – a result that, under the current circumstances, the Blues might not be too disappointed with.
