The Weekend Accumulator: Southampton’s misery to continue

| 11.02.2012

This weekend’s Championship accumulator comes in at just under 15/1, as we look to cash in on Southampton’s dramatic fall from grace, while Birmingham and Ipswich can do the business to complete a treble.

It was not long ago that Nigel Adkins’ Southampton looked set to run away with the Championship, but after a sticky Christmas, the wheels are now well and truly coming off their promotion push.

The Saints have not won any of the last five in league and cup, and this week succumbed to a shock home FA Cup defeat to Millwall.

They welcome Burnley to St Mary’s next, who are unbeaten in four, having taken eight points from a possible 12.

The Clarets have won their last two on the road without conceding and though a third successive away victory might be asking too much, the Lancashire side are 11/5 to leave the south coast with a share of the spoils.

Elsewhere, now that Birmingham have rid themselves of Europa League duty, the Blues are showing their promotion credentials.

A run of nine league games without defeat has seen them move to within two points of the automatic promotion places and a trip to Barnsley should hold little fear.

The Tykes are the model of inconsistency, with each of their last three league wins immediately followed by defeat. Chris Hughton’s men are good value at 11/10 to take all three points at Oakwell.

Championship strugglers Ipswich complete the accumulator but don’t be put off by their modest league position.

The Tractor Boys followed up a thumping 5-1 win against leaders West Ham with an excellent 3-2 win at the Ricoh Arena and we are backing them to make it three on the spin against Middlesborough.

Boro are without a league win since Boxing Day and last weekend’s goalless draw at home to Crystal Palace made it just three points from 18. Ipswich are on offer at 6/4 to send Boro back to Teeside empty handed.

Championship accumulator
Birmingham to beat Barnsley @ 11/10
Ipswich to beat Middlesbrough @ 6/4
Southampton to draw with Burnley @ 11/5
