Athletic Bilbao v Man Utd: Fergie’s men face huge task to qualify

| 14.03.2012

Manchester United may have enjoyed a good weekend in the Premier League thanks to their victory over West Bromwich Albion and Manchester City’s loss at Swansea City but in Europe things continue to be a struggle.

United lost the first leg of this Europa League clash 3-2 against the Spaniards at Old Trafford and, in truth, it should have been even worse for Sir Alex Ferguson’s men.

They are still in the tie but face a tough test to progress…

Match odds

United are the narrow 6/4 favourites to come through and record a victory but that will be easier said than done.

United may have won their last Europa League away game against a very average Ajax side but they have struggled in Europe this season, crashing out of the Champions League thanks to a dire defeat away to Basel.

Atheltic Bilbao will be a tough proposition for United but, with the Spaniards losing their last game against Osasuna they shouldn’t be ruled out.

However, if the La Liga side perform as they did at Old Trafford, then backing them at 8/5 could prove a lucrative punt.

They haven’t lost at home in the Europa League in their last six games and have won three of their last four.

Goal markets

United have kept just one clean sheet in their last eight away games in all competitions and have scored at least two in their previous four games away from Old Trafford.

Backing both teams to score looks tempting at 8/15.

Finally, Wayne Rooney continued his fine goalscoring form with two goals against West Brom at the weekend and he can be backed at 9/2 to find the net first in this clash.
