Don’t expect Vettel to run away with the Formula One championship
Sebastian Vettel may be the big 1/1 favourite to win the Formula One championship this season but he looks set to be pushed all the way by a rapidly improving field.
Vettel clinched the title at the 15th race of the 19 race season last year and went on to beat Jenson Button into second place by a massive 122 points.
However, Mercedes boss Ross Brawn likes what he is seeing from the other teams in testing and doesn’t expect the Red Bull driver to sweep to the title as he did last term.
Brawn said: “I’m expecting the tightest start to a season we’ve seen for a number of years.
“I think we’re going to have a really exciting season.”
“There are five or six teams that are a much closer grouping than we have seen for a number of years. I have a feeling it is going to be quite close when we get to the first few races.”
However, one team who doesn’t expect to be competitive when the Australian Grand Prix takes place in Melbourne on March 18 is Ferrari.
Ferrari drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa have been banned from talking to the media and technical director, Pat Fry admitted they have “a lot of work to do” to get the car competitive.
Alonso is 8/1 to get a win at Melbourne while Massa is a massive 40/1 to start the season with a victory.
In contrast, all the noises coming out of McLaren are extremely positive with Lewis Hamilton seemingly reinvigorated by some good results over the winter testing period.
Hamilton and Button look the most likely to push Vettel in the Australian Grand Prix and they can be backed at 5/1 and 6/1 to start the season with a win.
