Comolli takes the rap for stuttering Liverpool league form
Published:More than 30 points separate Liverpool from Premier League leaders Manchester United, and such a gulf has led to the dismissal of the Anfield club’s director of football Damien Comolli.
Liverpool currently sit in eighth place, and but for their Carling Cup success, would fail to qualify for European competition next season after racking up just 46 points from 33 league games.
In the aftermath of such domestic woes, the Fenway Sports Group who own the club have decided to take action against Comolli, whose job entailed identifying potential transfer targets to bring to the club.
One of those targets was Andy Carroll, whose return of six goals has been condemned in comparison to his £35million transfer fee, and question marks also remain over the likes of Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing, who also signed for extortionate fees.
Whilst Comolli played a huge role in each major signing Liverpool have made during Kenny Dalglish’s tenure, the Scottish manager has had the final say on the eventual recruitment of the players, and so it appears interesting to see what the club’s owners next move will be regarding the boss.
He has hovered around the head of the betting to be the next Premier League manager to go for the past week or so, and with action now being taken by owner John W. Henry, his reign looks more and more uncertain.
That said, the American and his advisors would likely not risk the backlash that any ill treatment or sacking of Dalglish would provoke from the Liverpool fans.
The Reds legend could instead decide that his services would be better suited in a different role at the club however, and it is imaginable that Dalglish could in fact take the job that Comolli has vacated come the summer.
