Newcastle boss Pardew planning swoop for Swans’ loan star
Published:With seven goals from midfield and a Premier League player of the month accolade to his name, Gylfi Sigurdsson has made a contribution of epic proportions since joining Swansea on loan in January.
His all-action displays have seen him integrate seamlessly into the Swans’ attractive side, and the Icelandic midfielder has now caught the attention of other Premier League managers, with Alan Pardew of Newcastle reportedly showing a serious interest.
Swansea would be keen to tie Sigurdsson to a permanent contract, and the player is believed to be open to the idea of staying in Wales, but such as been the magnitude of his success for the newly-promoted side, he may have his head turned by a bigger Premier League club.
Sigurdsson’s parent club Hoffenheim would also aim to recoup the £8million transfer fee they paid Reading for his services, and that, coupled with the 22-year-old’s wages, could prove a stumbling block for Swansea.
No such problem would exist for Newcastle, who will receive a financial windfall amidst European qualification, particularly if they are able to achieve a top four finish.
Newcastle are not thought to be the only club to have had their interest peaked by the sparkling performances of Sigurdsson though, and the Magpies could face competition from a whole host of clubs for his signature, yet their initial interest appears to be the most concrete.
That said, his current boss Brendan Rodgers, who also worked with the player during his time at Reading, is believed to rate him so highly that he would take the midfielder to a bigger club in the future should he get the chance.
Rodgers has been linked with the Tottenham post should Harry Redknapp, as expected, take the England job, and Pardew’s most serious competition for Sigurdsson could come from Rodgers, regardless of which club he is in charge of by the summer.
