Tottenham winger would find move to Spain difficult to resist
Published:It is no coincidence that Tottenham’s return to form over the past week has coincided with the resurgence of Gareth Bale, who is once again drawing admiring glances from Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Bale, whose immense improvement over the past two years has been quite remarkable, is valued at around £50million, and the lightning-fast winger has now admitted that he would find a switch to either La Liga club difficult to resist.
“If you are talking about Barcelona or Real Madrid, two of the biggest clubs in the world, then it’s a bit like Harry (Redknapp) and England, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime dream,” said the Welshman to BBC Sport.
The electric wide-man has already proved his Champions League credentials in last year’s competition, destroying the likes of Inter Milan’s Maicon as Spurs negotiated a passage to the quarter-final stage, and he will be essential between now and the end of the season in Tottenham’s bid to qualify again at 1/6.
Still only 22, Bale’s astonishing progress since being switched to a more attacking role down the flank has made him look a completely different player, and Harry Redknapp should take acclaim for allowing the Welshman greater freedom to express himself.
His pace and trickery out wide would suit both Real and Barca, and Spurs would likely prefer to sell their prize asset to a European competitor rather than domestic rivals Manchester City, who they will hope to challenge for the title next season.
That said, an astronomical fee would be required to persuade Tottenham to do business, though promising forward Christian Tello could be used as a makeweight in any deal should Barcelona get the green light to speak to Bale.
With Redknapp still heavy favourite to take the England job, and Bale willing to consider a move abroad, it could be all change at White Hart Lane next season, though Champions League looks like it will be a welcome addition in North London, as Spurs can claim a top four finish at that 1/6.
