Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain named in Roy Hodgson’s Euro 2012 squad

| 16.05.2012

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been named by Roy Hodgson in his Euro 2012 England squad.

The Arsenal winger has been used sparingly throughout the season by Arsene Wenger but has done enough in his limited game time to convince Hodgson that he is worth taking to Poland and the Ukraine.

As expected, Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has been dropped, with Manchester City full-back Micah Richards and Stoke striker Peter Crouch also missing out.

Man Utd midfielders Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick are also nowhere to be seen which seems to rule out any possession football being played by the Three Lions.

Overall, it’s a pretty safe squad from Hodgson with the central midfield being packed with veterans Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Gareth Barry and Scott Parker, all of whom will combine to make up what could be the slowest central midfield ever to grace an international tournament.

John Terry has been included despite his recent poor form and his imminent trial for allegedly racially abusing Anton Ferdinand, while Hodgson also finds a place for Stewart Downing who has contributed no goals and no assists for Liverpool this season – although he was very decent in England’s qualifying campaign.

Elsewhere, Joe Hart is backed up by Rob Green and – somewhat surprisingly – Norwich’s John Ruddy.

The strikers are Andy Carroll, Danny Welbeck and Jermain Defoe, with Wayne Rooney also named despite missing the first two games through suspension.

On standby are Jordan Henderson, Adam Johnson, Daniel Sturridge, Phil Jagielka and Birmingham’s Jack Butland.

England are 9/1 to win Euro 2012 and that price looks like remaining fairly steady with such a conservative squad being named.
