Man Utd and Bayern Munich set to battle for Everton’s Baines
Everton face a tough task if they are to hang on to left back Leighton Baines who has allegedly attracted the attention of Manchester United and Bayern Munich.
The 27-year-old has once again enjoyed a good season with the Toffees and, according to the Mirror, it’s been enough for Sir Alex Ferguson to consider launching a summer bid for him.
With Patrice Evra now 31-years-old and not looking the player he was three seasons ago, Baines – who looks set to go to the European Championships as Ashley Cole’s understudy – would appear to be the perfect replacement.
However, with Bayern Munich also allegedly keen on the player, Ferguson faces having to stump up a hefty wedge of cash if they are to secure his services, with the Mirror reporting that Everton boss David Moyes is looking for around £15million.
Baines has three years left to run on his contract and, with Everton hardly rolling in it, now could be the perfect time to cash in on the player who signed from Wigan for £5million back in 2007.
It’s hard to see Baines being able to resist the lure of Champions League football with either United or Bayern but whether there is substance to the rumours remains to be seen.
Elsewhere, Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen looks poised for a summer move to Tottenham Hotspur after urging the club to consider selling him to the north London side.
Speaking to De Telegraaf newspaper, the 25-year-old said: “The board is asking a fair amount for a player who is only contracted for another year.
“I trust that Ajax and Spurs can turn water into wine and sort it out soon.”
