New parts to help Ferrari’s Alonso go close in Spanish Grand Prix

No constructor has claimed more successes in the Spanish Grand Prix than Ferrari and Fernando Alonso is 12/1 to extend this advantage over the opposition with victory in his home race for just the second time.

Ferrari have been prominent in the headlines in recent days for various reasons, with one of which being why they should attempt to sign Paul Di Resta to replace Felipe Massa and partner Alonso from next season.

However, more importantly, the constructor needs to think about this season, with the Spanish Grand Prix potentially highlighting the extent of their title challenge.

Given the deficiencies of his car, Alonso has done exceedingly well to be just ten points behind after four races, but a host of new parts are set to be rolled out at the Circuit De Catalunya that should put the F2012 closer to matching its rivals.

Some of these were trialled in the first in-season test session at Mugello last week, while others including a new front wing and diffuser are among the expected new parts for free practice in Spain and may help Alonso remain competitive towards the front of the grid.

The Spanish Grand Prix is the first race of the season to take place in Europe and Alonso is eager to secure a second success on home soil, following his victory for Renault in 2006.

One thing that may help is the light rain anticipated at the track on race day, with Alonso’s triumph in the Malaysian Grand Prix coming when conditions were wet and unpredictable.

Furthermore, just having the support of the home crowd could spur him on to better things as it “makes you give your maximum”.

Alonso is 11/4 in the Formula One odds to finish on the podium in Spain and a tempting 4/6 to finish inside the top six.
