Liverpool on track to name two new signings in next 48 hours

Brendan Rodgers had stated that he was optimistic of bringing two new faces to Liverpool by the end of the week and growing reports suggest that these will be Clint Dempsey and Fabio Borini.

Rodgers has clearly targeted boosting his attacking options at Anfield and this seems justified as Liverpool would have finished in the bottom half last season if a table was made solely on the number of goals scored.

This is in comparison to them having the joint third best defensive record over the 38 Premier League fixtures.

Rodgers has previously worked with Borini at both Chelsea and Swansea, but was unable to bring the Italian to Wales permanently as instead he opted to return home.

However, the lure of Liverpool will be far greater than Swansea and with as much as £10m on the table, Roma may be willing to sell.

The fact that Francesco Totti also wants to play as the focal point of a three-pronged attack at Roma is another reason as to why he may be allowed to leave.

Clint Dempsey is the other expected signing and may cost around £7m from Fulham.

With Steven Gerrard arguably not the attacking force of old and impressive in a more defensive-minded role for England at Euro 2012, he could settle into a deeper role this season alongside Lucas at Anfield.

This would enable Dempsey, who scored 17 Premier League goals last season for Fulham, to be employed as a support striker to either Borini or Luis Suarez.

Andy Carroll does not seem to be in Rodgers’ immediate plans, with the manager indicating that he is open to the possibility of the England striker being shipped out on loan.

Carroll’s physical and robust style does not lend itself typically to Rodgers’ pass and move style and so opportunities may be limited at Anfield.
