Mahan can emulate Woods’ 2012 PGA Tour record at Canadian Open

| 26.07.2012

Tiger Woods is the only player so far this season to win three times on the PGA Tour, but that could be set to change after the RBC Canadian Open where Hunter Mahan has to be fancied for victory.

Mahan is one of two joint favourites to triumph at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club at 12/1 with Matt Kuchar and the tight nature of the course considerably plays to his strengths.

The greens on Ontario are not the biggest on tour and so ball striking could be among the most critical factors when looking for a winner.

Mahan heads the whole of the PGA Tour in this department this season, while the fact that he also lies third in terms of greens in regulation and ninth for driving accuracy, suggests that the course should be right up his street.

His current form is not too shabby either, even though his victories at the Accenture Match Play and the Shell Houston Open came in the opening three months of the season.

Mahan has finished in the top 20 in each of his last three starts, including at the Open Championship.

Ernie Els was victorious in the major and has also opted to fly to Canada to attempt to profit from his good form.

Els is 16/1 to secure back-to-back successes, which is the same price as Jim Furyk, who arguably provides more of an appeal.

Furyk won the Canadian Open on the last occasion it was held at Hamilton in 2006 and has been knocking on the door this season with four top-ten finishes.

Of the outsiders, Seung-Yul Noh is interesting at 50/1, as 16 of his last 20 completed rounds have been sub-70, which may be vital on this par-70 course, while he has at least made the cut in his last 11 PGA Tour starts.
