Man United confident of winning race for in-demand Arsenal star

After much speculation, one of the summer’s lengthiest transfer sagas could be nearing a conclusion, with Manchester United seemingly in pole position to sign Robin Van Persie from Arsenal.

Van Persie has re-affirmed his desire to leave the Emirates since returning to training this week, and wants a deal concluded sooner rather than later, as the Gunners jet off to Asia this weekend.

Whilst it may be far-fetched to suggest his future will be resolved before Saturday though, significant developments may occur, with Sir Alex Ferguson believed to have told friends he is leading the chase for the 28-year-old forward.

Ferguson’s United are amongst three clubs maintaining a very serious interest in Van Persie, and the legendary Scotsman is confident of fending off the attentions of local rivals Manchester City, along with Juventus, to clinch a £20million move for the Dutchman.

It is thought that Ferguson sees Van Persie as a key ingredient in rejuvenating his side’s title ambitions, as he looks to team last season’s Premier League Golden Boot winner with England star Wayne Rooney, who himself smashed 27 goals last season.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are thought to have their hands tied somewhat in negotiations for Van Persie, as despite their reluctance to sell the player now, he would be able to move for nothing next summer.

Whilst losing him to a title rival isn’t preferable for Arsene Wenger, he would likely rather Van Persie make the move to Old Trafford over Eastlands, having lost Samir Nasri, Gael Clichy and Kolo Toure to Man City over the past three years.

City themselves are thought to be keen to trim their squad before making any big-name additions meanwhile, which further cements the notion that United are ready to pounce for the forward.

Van Persie is said to be tempted by the prospect of joining a club with such a rich pedigree, and believes he can claim the silverware he craves as a Manchester United player.
