Redgrave heavily odds-on for Olympic gold number six

SIR STEVE REDGRAVE is the red-hot favourite to light to cauldron, according to Ladbrokes.

With just over 24 hours until the opening ceremony it is the five-time gold medallist who the bookies favour at odds of 1/3 to be given the honour of lighting the cauldron. And one punter who believes Redgrave is the man for the job has placed £1000 on the rower to collect winnings of just over £1300.

Over the last few weeks David Beckham has been subject to a country-wide gamble after being given the cold shoulder by Stuart Pearce, which has seen his odds collapse to 5/1 from his original quote of 33/1.

Beckham shares second favouritism with Dame Kelly Holmes, Daley Thomson and archer Alison Williamson at 5/1.

Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes said: “For a while it looked like Beckham might steal it from underneath Redgrave’s nose, but with just a day to go all fingers are pointing at the five-time gold medallist rather than golden balls.”
