US Open Accumulator: Olympic silver to aid Robson’s chances

| 27.08.2012

Laura Robson will hope to use her first-ever grand slam ranking to overcome teenage American qualifier Samantha Crawford on Day 2 at the US Open.

The 18-year-old, who won silver for Team GB at the Olympic Games with Andy Murray in the mixed doubles, 1/3 to beat Crawford.

It is role reversal for the Melbourne-born left-hander, who is used to playing the underdog in the early stages of big competitions.

But thanks to her world 89 ranking, Robson will be taking on a younger opponent in the first round at Flushing Meadows.

With a new coach and increased media attention from her participation at London 2012, Robson will hope to have the tools necessary to hold off Crawford.

2008 US Open finalist Jelena Jankovic kicks off her New York campaign against Kateryna Bondarenko, and is the 2/7 favourite to progress.

The Serbian has not quite lived up to the success of her male compatriot Novak Djokovic since then, but she should have more than enough to win here.

Urszula Radwanska may live in the shadow of her elder sister Agnieska, who finished as runner-up at Wimbledon this year, but she is making great strides in the women’s game.

And the younger Radwanska is at 13/8 to pull off a shock and defeat Roberta Vinci, in the biggest gamble of the accumulator.

Juan Martin Del Petro is unlikely to repeat his trick of three years ago and win this year’s US Open, but he is likely to overcome bad-boy David Nalbandian in the first round.

Nalbandian is remembered more recently for kicking a line judge that causing upsets, and bronze-medal winner Del Potro should win at 1/5.

Tomas Berdych will be hoping to prove a thorn in Roger Federer’s side later in the draw, as long as he can beat David Goffin on Day 2 at 1/7.

The Czech has only ever made the fourth round of the US Open, but he should overcome Goffin with relative ease.

German Tommy Haas faces up to Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis in one of the more intriguing draw’s of the men’s first round at the US Open.

Haas is a steady 3/10 to win, and considering Gulbis’ slide from world number 21 to 119 in just over a year he is set to triumph.
