Andy Murray v Novak Djokovic: Murray out to follow path of coach

| 10.09.2012

Ladbrokes will refund any losing bets on Andy Murray beating Novak Djokovic if the Brit is beaten in a fifth-set decider, but there are grounds to believe that he will instead triumph in a final set.

Murray is 2/1 to win his first Grand Slam at the US Open in what will be his fifth final.

He took one step forward in his Wimbledon final with Roger Federer in July when finally winning a set in a final and then at the Olympics showed that he can hold his composure on the biggest stage when claiming gold.

Importantly, he blazed through Djokovic in the semi finals in London.

Alongside ending his Grand Slam hoodoo, Murray will not need too much incentive to bring his best to Flushing Meadow, given his prior record against Djokovic on the biggest stages.

Djokovic has come through in both of their Grand Slam meetings at the Australian Open, with the 7-5 reverse in the final set this year in the semi finals making the viewing public as tired as the players.

It is 13/2 that Murray wins 3-2 on this occasion and this will be the scoreline if he follows in the footsteps of his coach Ivan Lendl.

Lendl gained a maiden Grand Slam title at the fifth time of asking, battling back from two sets down to beat John McEnroe in the 1984 French Open.

Given that Murray has dropped the first set to both Marin Cilic and Tomas Berdych in the last two rounds at Flushing Meadow, Djokovic may be favoured at 8/15 to take the opening set.

It is 2/5 that Djokovic emerges victorious to claim both hard-court Grand Slams this season and he has the best record of all players on the surface in 2012 – 35 wins and just three defeats.
