Bright Cazorla can end Arsenal goal drought away to Liverpool

| 02.09.2012

Arsenal, yet to lose in their first two Premier League games of the season, are also quite worryingly yet to score this term too.

They are 2/5 to break that record in their next outing away to Liverpool on Sunday, and that price looks worthy of attention.

0-0 draws have emanated from fixtures at home to Sunderland and away to Stoke, though in truth, the Gunners have deserved to come out on top in either clash.

Their failure to do so has stemmed from a lack of cutting edge, with finishing ability already looking sorely missed in the absence of departed captain Robin Van Persie.

New signings Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud have both shown glimpses of their talents, but both have wasted decent scoring opportunities in their first two Arsenal appearances.

Therefore, with those two as 7/2 joint-favourites to be the Gunners’ first scorers of the season, better value may be found in other options.

Gervinho looked lively at the Britannia Stadium on Sunday, and is 9/2 to notch first, but his end product often leaves much to be desired.

Elsewhere, Theo Walcott is a 5/1 chance, but punters backing that should be cautious considering the England winger was relegated to the bench in Arsenal’s last outing.

Therefore, 6/1 Santi Cazorla looks a very tempting option to be Arsenal’s first scorer of the campaign, after two hugely impressive opening performances with the North London club.

Cazorla has took the mantle of chief playmaker at Arsenal, but his eye for goal looks sharp too, as proven by his haul of nine La Liga goals last season.

The Spanish schemer forced Stoke keeper Asmir Begovic into action on several occasions on Sunday, and could go one better by beating Pepe Reina this Sunday.

Meanwhile, those who feel that Arsenal’s goal drought is set to extend past this weekend can take advantage of generous odds regarding the first side the Gunners will breach.

It is 2/1 that it takes until Southampton’s visit to the Emirates for Arsenal to score their first goal of the season, which is the Gunners’ fourth fixture of the campaign.

However, Arsenal have never previously gone three opening Premier League games without scoring, and so appear primed to break their duck at the next available opportunity, at that aforementioned 2/5.
