Wigan v Fulham: Berbatov will not lead visitors to rare away success

| 21.09.2012

Fulham have a dreadful away record in 2012 and they can fall to another defeat when travelling to Wigan.

Based on form, punters may expect Fulham to be the favourites at the DW Stadium, but they are considered marginal underdogs at 7/4.

Even though they have a potentially formidable strike force in Dimitar Berbatov and Mladen Petric, it cannot be totally forgotten that they have lost eight of their 11 Premier League away days in this calendar year, drawing the other three.

However, they do historically enjoy their encounters with Wigan, avoiding defeat in 11 successive clashes between the pair.

Meanwhile, Berbatov’s two-goal debut against West Brom will make him an exceedingly popular option to open the scoring at Wigan, which can be backed at a seemingly big price of 13/2.

Wigan may not have the greatest track record against Fulham, but they are in the middle of a decent stretch of home form, with four wins in their last seven and just a single defeat.

Roberto Martinez’ team are 6/4 to claim a first home win of the campaign and this would have been earmarked as a vital three points to aid any early-season concerns over relegation.

The bad news for Wigan is that they have never managed to score more than the one goal in any showdown with Fulham.

So punters favouring Wigan for victory may also want to consider enhancing their profits by opting for the 1-0 triumph at 7/1.

Wigan are likely to opt for James McArthur and James McCarthy in central midfield and this pair could offer the value in the first goalscorer market, with each priced at 25/1.

Alternatively, Shaun Maloney will play in a more advanced role, alongside being on penalty duties. He is 8/1 to bag the opener against Fulham.
