Hart, Vidic and Bale make our multi-national World XI

| 24.10.2012

Picking a 17-man squad made up of only one player per nationality was initially considered an easy task. But this proved far from the case.

Our final squad is below, but feel free to leave a comment at the bottom if you believe we have made a major misjudgement.

The idea was not to pick the 17 best players, but an actual team that would win games.

Some players were no brainers to include, namely Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Vincent Kompany, but things then got a little trickier.

For example, there were calls for Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Sergio Ramos to be the Spanish inclusion, but we finally settled for Sergio Busquets.

With Dani Alves and Gareth Bale sure to push on from full back, midfield protection is vital in front of the central defenders.

There are actually not many players in the world adept at performing this role of winning the ball and shielding the defence and definitely none more effective than Busquets.

In the roles performed by Xavi and Iniesta, there is much more choice and so Busquets made the team to provide better balance.

Singling out a German also proved tricky, with Manuel Neuer, Philipp Lahm and Mesut Ozil all presenting strong cases, alongside final pick Bastian Schweinsteiger.

With Messi and Ronaldo playing, it was virtually impossible to find space for Wayne Rooney, leaving Joe Hart and Ashley Cole as the only real options.

However, as the argument to name Bale was so strong, we thought he would be most effective from left back.

Our final team is:

Gianluigi Buffon
Alex Song
Gokhan Inler
Luka Modric
Arjen Robben
Zlatan Ibrahimovic
