Alonso tweet puts Man City, Liverpool and Bilbao on nerve alert

Published:

There has been a long-running belief that Xabi Alonso has one of the biggest influences in the Real Madrid dressing room and is certainly one of the players most trusted by Jose Mourinho.

Therefore, Liverpool and Manchester City are the Premier League clubs that may be the most concerned by a recent tweet that was published by mistake by the Spanish midfielder.

Rather than send as a private message, Alonso made the following viewable to all for a few minutes, before realising his mistake and deleting the post.

“I will tell Mo (Mourinho) to consider you and at the same time hopefully we can increase the level in the dressing room.”

Given that the tweet was written in Spanish, Liverpool fans can take a deep breath that Steven Gerrard was not the intended recipient.

However, Pepe Reina could be a possibility, given the relationship he will have with Alonso, both from their time together at Anfield and the Spanish national squad.

David Silva’s season has not begun in the way many would have expected and is another that would jump at the chance to join Real Madrid.

A move to the Bernabeu already looked a done deal before Silva joined Manchester City, as Mourinho pulled the plug on the switch after personal terms had been agreed.

The third logical recipient is Fernando Llorente, who has had a miserable few months at Athletic Bilbao, struggling for first-team appearances.

Llorente’s contract is up in the summer and his agent may already be lining up potential suitors for a transfer on a free at the end of the season.

He has been linked with Real Madrid and Mourinho would surely welcome another world-class striker into his ranks, if for greater squad depth if nothing else.

Feel free to leave a comment at the bottom if you believe the tweet was meant for somebody else.
