Done deal that Man Utd will sign long-term target in summer

Given the array of attacking riches already available to Sir Alex Ferguson, another striker is arguably the last thing Manchester United need, but reports suggest that an agreement has been reached ‘in principle’ to sign Robert Lewandowski in the summer.

Lewandowski’s performances have been a major factor in Dortmund becoming more of a world force in recent seasons, with ten goals in 16 games for the German champions this season.

He has also been on target in four of Dortmund’s six Champions League fixtures as they progressed through the Group of Death unscathed without a single defeat.

However, Dortmund’s sporting director Michael Zorc has revealed that this will be the Polish striker’s last at Westfalenstadion, stating that it is a “done deal” that he will depart.

The likes of Arsenal and Inter Milan have also been heavily linked with Lewandowski, but it is a switch to Old Trafford that appeals most.

Further reports indicate that a transfer sum of £12m has been agreed, with Lewandowski to sign on for five years.

Signing Lewandowski would suggest that Sir Alex is keen to permanently utilise Wayne Rooney in more of an advanced midfield position and he has already dropped slightly deeper this season following the arrival of Robin van Persie to lead the line.

The injury sustained by Shinji Kagawa has played an added role in the decision and a return to fitness of the Japanese schemer could be especially valuable if Lewandowski was to sign.

The duo linked up effectively when previously together at Dortmund and could rekindle this understanding at Old Trafford.

What Manchester United achieve this season is unlikely to have any bearing on Lewandowski’s future, but a couple of trophies are never a bad thing.
