Wayne Rooney in at 10/1 to beat Shearer’s Premier League record

Wayne Rooney’s brace against champions Manchester City on Sunday saw him make it to 150 league goals, making him the sixth highest goalscorer in Premier League history – but he still has some way to go before he catches the man at the top of that list.

Alan Shearer bagged 260 Premier League goals during stints for Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United making him by far and away the all-time top goalscorer (Andy Cole is second with 187).

However, Rooney has shown several times over the past few seasons that he’s capable of banging in a shed-load of goals. Last year he hit 27 and was only beaten to the golden boot by current United teammate Robin van Persie who knocked in 30 for Arsenal.

Such has been his prowess in front of goal throughout his career that he’s now been cut to 10/1 to beat Shearer’s all-time record by the time he hangs up his Nike’s.

With the England man needing to get 111 more goals to overtake Shearer he would need to average just over 20 goals for the next five years of his career which would take him up to 32-years-old.

Needless to say that he would also need to stay in the Premier League for that period and avoid any serious long-term injuries but, if he can avoid those admittedly plentiful pitfalls, then there is every chance he can keep banging in the goals.

You may have to wait a while for your punt to come to fruition but the 10/1 offered looks like a pretty decent long-term punt.
