Arsenal ready to break transfer record for striker Jovetic

Arsenal are set to break their transfer record to bag Fiorentina striker Stevan Jovetic this summer – if the latest transfer rumours are to be believed.

According to the Daily Mail, the Gunners could be ready to splash out £20 million to bag the 23-year-old who has impressed Arsenal scouts during several trips to Italy.

However, there are one or two slight snags with regards to this story.

Firstly, the Mail reckon that Arsene Wenger has £70 million to splash around. That seems a little optimistic considering he was supposed to have had pretty much the same amount to spend last summer. And the summer before that.

Secondly, there is the small matter of Champions League football. The Gunners are struggling to make it back into Europe’s elite competition and failure to do so would make it far harder (and pricier) to bag players of Jovetic’s calibre.

Elsewhere, on a rather quiet day for thrilling gossip, Everton are allegedly preparing a bid for CSKA Moscow’s Japanese midfielder Keisuke Honda.

talkSPORT believes the necessarily tight-fisted Toffees would be able to bag him at a bargain basement price as he is out of contract at the end of the year.

However, they could face a battle with Fiorentina for his signature who may have the funds from the transfer of Jovetic available to them.
