Basel v Tottenham: Drawing habit could hamper Spurs

Published:

Tottenham got out of jail against Basel in the first leg of this quarter-final tie, coming from 2-0 down to secure a 2-2 draw, after being outplayed by the Swiss side for great periods.

Spurs’ away record in the Europa League will do little to inspire confidence, especially when they are 17/10 to score the victory inside 90 minutes.  The London outfit have won just one of six on the road in this competition and that came against Irish minnows Shamrock Rovers.

The only side to travel to St Jakob Park and win in the last 17 fixtures is German giants Bayern Munich.

As for the hosts record on their own patch in this tournament; they have won their preceding four, remaining undefeated in five, making their 6/4 price to score the victory here an attractive one.

Those searching for more security can get 8/13 that Murat Yakin’s men advance to the semi-finals by any means, with the visitors 6/5 to make it to the last-four.

The draw should also be given some consideration at 12/5.

Andre Villas-Boas’ men have shared the spoils in four of five away from White Hart Lane in Europe, while both teams drew in their last outings in their respective leagues.

Those fancying a bout of extra-time will be enticed by odds of 11/1 that this clash ends 2-2, mirroring the scoreline at the Lane, as well as the outcome for the Lillywhites’ when they took on Everton at the weekend.

Marco Streller has been the RotBlau’s main man this term, hitting 14 goals, including four in the Europa League and he is available at 6/1 to break the deadlock here.

With Ladbrokes running an offer whereby if Emmanuel Adebayor nets first, losing first goalscorer bets are refunded, it may be worth looking elsewhere in the Tottenham ranks for the opener.

Gylfi Sigurdsson has been potent of late, netting in his last two outings, while he has already notched three times in European competition, making him an interesting proposition at 10/1 to strike the opening blow.
