Impossible to back Celta in Spanish basement battle

Published:

Given that they are facing the only team ranked below them in La Liga Monday night could represent a rare occasion to back Celta Vigo, but their away record makes that a risky proposition.

Having lost 13 of their 15 league matches on the road this season, winning just one of the last 18 in all competitions, Os Celestes make the long trip east to face the islanders in dire form.

The 5/2 visitors have shipped 10 goals in their previous three away games, typically losing all three to leave them level on 24 points with their opponents here.

The concession of goals on the road is the key reason why Gregorio Manzano’s Mallorca side find themselves at the foot of the table with a huge 15-goal deficit to make up on Celta.

Away games against Barcelona and Real Madrid are hardly going to help matters in situations such as that, but although they conceded five goals in each of those matches they did win the two contests before that against Sevilla and Granada.

Los Bermellones have scored at least once in each of their last six home games, and at 21/20 it is they who look the better value to achieve what would be a fifth win of the season at the Iberostar Stadium.

Given that these two have conceded 108 goals in their combined 60 matches this season, then the 3/4 for both teams to score looks a tempting proposition, as does over 2.5 goals at 20/21.

Ultimately though it should be Mallorca who triumph simply given that they are the best of a bad pair.

The hosts to win with both teams to score should tempt at 10/3, whilst the coupled correct score of Mallorca to win 2-1 or 3-1 certainly looks good value at 5/1.
