Man City and Wigan meetings indicate what’s to come at Wembley

| 16.04.2013

As the odds suggested at the semi-final stage, Manchester City and Wigan are to contest the FA Cup final in May, with the reigning Premier League champions 1/5 favourites to lift the trophy.

And in their bid for a second success in this competition in three years, City’s recent league record opposing Wigan makes for positive reading.

The pairing have squared off only once so far in the Premier League this term, with their Etihad Stadium clash each team’s next scheduled fixture.

But in the one previous bout during this campaign, the pattern of the Citizens winning the match without conceding was continued.

Such an outcome has now prevailed from each of the past six encounters between these two, whilst Roberto Mancini’s men have won seven of their last eight games against Wigan without being breached.

As such, in spite of the Latics turning in some superlative displays en route to the final of this competition, and racking up 12 goals in six outings too, they are perhaps best watched as 10/3 chances to lift a maiden FA Cup.

And further strengthening the notion that City can again triumph with a clean sheet is their tremendous defensive record across all competitions this season.

Indeed, Demba Ba’s semi-final strike for Chelsea was the first seasonal goal the Citizens conceded in the FA Cup, whilst they have also found the net on 15 occasions in five tournament matches this term.

Add in that Mancini’s charges have conceded fewer Premier League goals than any other side this season also, and City look yet stronger candidates to hold firm at Wembley, as they have done on two of their past three FA Cup visits to the ground.

Scope for further betting opportunities could be further gleamed from the upcoming league meeting between the pair, but currently, City appear justified heavy favourites to claim the FA Cup at Wigan’s expense.
