Team Sky confusion only makes road clearer for Contador
Published:Recent Tour de Romandie winner Chris Froome could be forgiven for being perplexed following the recent announcement from last year’s Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins.
National hero Wiggins was assumed to be taking a back seat in Team Sky’s 2013 tilt at the Tour de France, but he has recently been quoted as saying “the decision will be made probably in the last three days before we get to the Tour. I think whoever is in the best shape should be [chosen] really”
This is in stark contrast to the line taken by team boss Dave Brailsford last November and Froome who is in no doubt about what arrangement he thought was in place. Froome has stated “I have been reassured by the management at Team Sky that I have their full backing”.
A team as professional as the one that delivered the greatest prize in the sport last year is unlikely to be responsible for such a large miscommunication and so logic dictates that the ambitions of Wiggins for this season’s premier event have changed.
Consequently, this could be the right time to look beyond the first and third favourite in the market and back Alberto Contador.
Two-time Tour winner Contador is the undisputed main man in Team Saxo-Tinkoff and with that solidarity in mind – plus the Danish squad enjoying a decent start to the campaign – the value could lie with one of the most gifted riders ever to get on a bike.
The Spaniard’s CV encapsulates everything that anyone in the discipline would want to achieve and with his main competitors lacking the harmony that was such a hallmark of Wiggins’ success, odds of 15/8 on a third Tour victory look the way to react.
