Ferguson retirement sparks Man City Premier League favouritism

| 09.05.2013

Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure from Manchester United undoubtedly represents the end of an era, as the club will gear up for a Premier League campaign without the iconic manager for the first time ever next season.

And without the man who has brought 13 top-flight titles to Old Trafford, United’s ‘noisy neighbours’ are now afforded 13/8 favouritism to regain the Premier League crown next term.

It is a testament to the esteem Ferguson was held in by supporters around the globe, along with bookmakers and punters, that the Red Devils led the betting to keep the title they won back this season prior to the announcement of the Scotsman’s retirement.

But with his departure leaving such a ridiculously huge and difficult void to fill, United now find themselves at 7/4 to retain their championship, in a market almost certain to fluctuate dependent upon Ferguson’s eventual successor.

Jose Mourinho and David Moyes are most prominent in the betting to replace him, with the former enjoying slight 11/10 favouritism ahead of the 6/4 Everton chief.

And given the two Premier League titles he has previously claimed with Chelsea, justification of Mourinho’s favouritism to take the Old Trafford post would likely see United return to the forefront of the market to land a 21st English championship.

However, Moyes could prove a more prudent long-term appointment for the club, yet his immediate inexperience at the helm of a leading European giant could plausibly see United drift in the title market for next season, were he to be appointed.

Currently, the only certainty seems to be that whoever takes the immensely pressurised reins, they will do so with a pedigree unable to rival Ferguson’s.

And considering that, in company with City enjoying an impressive recent record over the Red Devils even under Ferguson’s stewardship, now may be the best time to back the Citizens for title glory.

Roberto Mancini’s men have won three of the past four league meetings between the pair, and the continuation of that trend could very well determine the fate of the Premier League championship in the Etihad Stadium outfit’s favour next season.
