Luminites can light up this year’s BGT as 9/1 third favourites

The last few days have seen Hungarian dance group Attraction cement their position as favourites to win this year’s Britain’s Got Talent, moving from 3/1 to 5/2 in the betting.

However, a look that BGT viewers have come to know and love in recent years – a Simon Cowell smile that seems to say “Kerching” – could have punters clamouring to back London-based quartet Luminites.

Think of a band made up of Ed Sheeran’s guitar skills, the vocal talent of Cover Drive’s Amanda Refier, the beatboxing ability of Biz Markie and a male vocalist to rival anything One Direction can throw at the charts and that’s pretty much Luminites in a nutshell.

It has become something of a TV talent show cliché to make someone else’s song “your own” but Luminites’ reworking of the 1975 Susan Cadogan hit ‘Hurts So Good’, was suitably different from the original and showed that the group would have mass appeal to a younger market (something which will be music to Cowell’s ears).

With the stripped back sound of an acoustic guitar, accompanied by assured beatboxing and harmonies described by Amanda Holden as “perfect”, the quartet – comprised of Jordan Clarke, Ben Francis, Stephanie Edwards and Corey Layzell – picked up a unanimous four yeses from the judges.

While the betting still favours shadow act Attraction, who would follow a long-line of dance acts should they emerge victorious, Luminites overtook 18-year-old Irish singer Jordan O’Keefe after being installed instantly as third favourites at 9/1.

O’Keefe wowed the judges earlier in the series with his version of One Direction’s Little Things, but the Irishman has now drifted from 7/1 to 10/1 since the emergence of Luminites.

Cowell described the foursome as his favourite act of the day after seeing their audition and the self-styled talent god rarely gets it wrong.
