Player to watch next season: George Boyd at Hull

| 30.05.2013

With a price tag of 4/6 to go straight back down, it appears Hull have not been given much of a chance ahead of next season’s Premier League campaign, but one man who will be going all out to prove the doubters wrong is George Boyd.

Hull’s promotion to the top flight comes at a time when the Scotland international is hitting his peak years and after working his way up from the lower regions of the game, Boyd will not be willing to let Premier League action slip through his fingers easily.

Having moved up the ranks from Stevenage Borough to join Hull, via spells at Peterborough and Nottingham Forest, the 27-year-old has stood out in every side he has graced thus far.

The winger has an eye-for goal, averaging 0.23 per game in the league from midfield, and combines flair and commitment in a way that has already endeared him to the Tigers faithful.

Boyd hit the headlines last year when a proposed move to Nottingham Forest fell through.

A failed eye test was the dubious reason given for the breakdown of the transfer but Forest’s loss has been Hull’s gain as the man who bagged more than 50 Posh assists helped the Tigers over the line in their promotion push.

If scoring from near the half-way line for Peterborough doesn’t prove that there’s nothing wrong with Boyd’s sight then nothing will. Hull fans won’t care if he runs around the pitch behind a specially-trained golden Labrador as long as he performs as well in the Premier League as he has done in his career to date.

A member of the PFA League One Team of the Year in 2007-08 and 2008-09, Boyd quickly ended speculation that he would struggle at a bigger club by notching four goals for Hull following his move from London Road, including a brace in the impressive 5-2 win over Birmingham.

Hull boast a number of players with points to prove in the Premier League, with Corry Evans looking to show his time at Manchester United was not just to keep brother Jonny company and Stephen Quinn looking to build on his experience with Sheffield United.

Dougie Wilson bagged the Tigers’ Young Player of the Year award last term and could provide competition for places next season but it is Boyd who will be key to ensuring Premier League football stays at the KC stadium for more than a year.
