PSG make Man Utd star their top target this summer

Wayne Rooney’s Manchester United future couldn’t be much higher up in the air.

He’s declared he wants to leave the champions, they’ve appointed a manager who has taken him to court and just about every big club is rumoured to be interested in him.

It is Paris Saint Germain, however, who have moved to the head of the grid in the race to secure the 27-year-old’s services.

The mega-rich French side are one of a few who can afford to pay him the mammoth wages he’s sure to demand, as well as the inflated transfer fee only Manchester United are able to command.

What’s most interesting regarding the PSG link is that they’ve moved the Englishman top of their summer wish list, ahead of Edinson Cavani and Arsene Wenger.

The French champions could well be in need of a new star striker with Zlatan Ibrahimovic refusing to commit his future to the club, while the retirement of global superstar David Beckham has hampered their quest to expand their brand around the world.

A household name, Rooney’s signature would cause a greater stir than either of their previous two top targets, with a vastly superior potential from a commercial perspective too.

From United’s perspective, a move abroad would be preferential to allowing a Premier League rival take him; they’d probably be prepared to sanction such a move at a reduced price to ensure a divisional foe was priced out of the market.

Having collected an impressive arsenal of medals during his time in England, Rooney himself is likely to be open to a move abroad and test himself on the continent.

Plus, Rooney’s attempts to learn/speak French is a nugget of potential comedy gold the world should not be deprived of.

Ladbrokes have Paris Saint-Germain chalked up as 11/4 shots to Rooney’s next employer come the opening day of the 2013/14 campaign.
