15:45 Royal Ascot: Tasty Mince can grind down opposition

Talk of horses and mince may have been confined to alarming news reports for the majority of the year, but Roger Charlton and James Doyle can change all that.

Having tasted success already at this Royal Ascot meeting with Al Kazeem in the Prince of Wales’ Stakes, the Charlton-Doyle partnership make their assault on the Diamond Jubilee Stakes in confident form.

Four-year-old filly Mince is the horse that will have the pair licking their lips at the prospect of victory in the 6f showdown, and at a price of 12/1 there is plenty to suggest that she’ll go well.

With nine of the last 14 winners of this race going off at a double-figure price, Charlton won’t be too put off at the odds for his two-time course and distance-winning filly, who registered four straight wins over 6f last year.

All but one of the last 17 horses to have enjoyed victory in a race renamed to coincide with last year’s Diamond Jubilee had won at Ascot before, and whilst the exceptional Black Caviar triumphed last year that was very much a freakish result. The undefeated Australian super mare is the only clear favourite to have won the race since 1997.

The champion sprinter was 1/6 when lining up in the previous renewal, and whilst there is no horse of that quality this time around, the form of the favourites might ward some off backing 2011 winner Society Rock, who heads the betting at 4/1 this time.

Better value might be found in an each-way shout for the 20/1 Soul for Saeed bin Suroor and jockey Silvestre De Sousa.

The Godolphin gelding was fourth in this race last year when Frankie Dettori was on board, and only lost out to Mince by a head in the John Guest Bengough Stakes when the pair last went head-to-head at Ascot in October.
