Lisicki’s SW19 win over Williams should not have come as a shock
Published:Sabine Lisicki’s victory over Serena Williams may have been billed as the biggest of all of the upsets at Wimbledon this year, but the victory should not have come as a mighty shock.
After all, it is the second year in succession where she has eliminated the top seed at SW19 in the fourth round, as she was responsible for the exit of Maria Sharapova 12 months ago.
Meanwhile, in each of the last three years and four of the last five, Lisicki has knocked the reigning French Open champion out of Wimbledon.
The result has meant that Lisicki has flown to the top of the Wimbledon betting at 3/1, alongside former champion Petra Kvitova.
However, Lisicki fell in the quarter finals to fellow German Angelique Kerber last year and will be hoping to avoid the same feat against Laura Robson’s conqueror Kaia Kanepi this time.
With the highest-ranked seed, Agnieszka Radwanska, also in Lisicki’s half of the draw, it is those players in the bottom section which may have the easier route to the final.
Sloane Stephens was tipped on this site at 66/1 earlier in the tournament and she still remains in the draw after winning a third three-setter in a row against Monica Puig.
She is now 8/1 and is the last American standing in the women’s draw for the second time in the three Grand Slams and faces Marion Bartoli in the quarter finals.
Kvitova is in the other game in this section, where she will face Kirsten Flipkens, who has already beaten the 2011 champion this year in Miami and has reached the quarter finals without dropping a set.
Flipkens may now offer the value in the Wimbledon winners’ market at 25/1, despite this already representing her longest progression through a Grand Slam.
