Barcelona admit failure in pursuit of David Luiz and Daniel Agger

Barcelona manager Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino has dismissed speculation that the club will try to sign either David Luiz or Daniel Agger this summer.

Martino claims he is happy with his options in defence at the Nou Camp, despite Barca lodging bids for both Premier League centre-backs.

Chelsea reportedly rejected a £35million offer for Luiz, with Blues boss Jose Mourinho moving to insist the Brazilian was not for sale.

And Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has echoed those sentiments regarding Agger, after Barca saw a £15m approach for the Dane rebuffed.

However, at a press conference ahead of their opening La Liga match against Levante, Martino denied suggestions the Spanish giants were interested in the pair.

“A new centre-back? I’m happy with the team I have,” said Martino. “There’s always the January window if we need anything. Last year’s problems in defence were the result of injuries. We have enough options if everybody’s fit.

“[Carlos] Puyol is on schedule with his recovery process. We are awaiting his return and expect him to be match fit again come September.

“We have Puyol in defence, Gerard Pique, Javier Mascherano, Marc Bartra and even Adriano. If someone gets injured, the January transfer window is only months away.”
