Murray in line for Djokovic semi-final clash at US Open

| 26.08.2013

Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic could meet in the semi finals of a Grand Slam for the first time since January 2012 after they were drawn in the same half at the US Open.

The main beneficiary is Rafa Nadal, who is now 2/1 joint favourite with Djokovic to win the tournament, while Murray can be backed at 3/1.

Murray and Djokovic’s past three Grand Slam meetings have been in finals, with the Scot winning the US Open last year and Wimbledon this, and the Serbian taking the Australian Open in between.

To reach the semi-finals Murray will likely have to beat Tomas Berdych, who recently knocked him out in straight sets in Cincinnati, in the quarters.

Murray also played Berdych in a wind-ravaged semi-final at the US Open last year, winning in four sets on the way to his maiden Slam victory.

The Wimbledon champion will begin his defence with a first round tie against Frenchman Michael Llodra, a player he has never lost to who is 49 in the world rankings.

Elsewhere Roger Federer’s new world ranking of seven – his lowest in 11 years – sees him in line for a quarter-final meeting with Nadal.

Federer is 12/1 to win the tournament, behind Juan Martin Del Potro at 10/1 as well as the three favourites.

Del Potro is the likely quarter-final opponent for Djokovic and after their marathon semi-final at Wimbledon – the longest semi-final in the history of the tournament – Murray will hope he is the fresher man in his semi regardless of who progresses.

Djokovic, the world number one, begins his tournament against Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis, ranked 126 in the world.
