Telescope new favourite as Ladbrokes go non runner no bet for St Leger

Published:

As Ladbrokes have now gone non runner money back for all horses in the St Leger betting, punters will now almost certainly be prepared to take the risk that new 3/1 favourite Telescope will be supplemented after his victory in the Great Voltigeur.

The 1m4f York contest is widely regarded as one of the better trials for the St Leger, despite the fact that it is run over a distance 2f shorter than the Doncaster showpiece.

Meanwhile, only two horses have completed the Great Voltigeur and St Leger double in the past decade, which were Rule Of Law in 2004 and Lucarno in 2007.

However, it is interesting that six of the last 11 St Leger winners had competed in the Great Voltigeur in the same season and had all finished in the first three.

This is a big boost to the chances of Foundry, who has substantially shortened from 25/1 into 14/1 in the St Leger betting after finishing second in the Great Voltigeur in just his second racecourse start.

His performance appeared the most eye-catching with the St Leger in mind and the opinion is that he looks open to improvement with a step up in trip.

Secret Number was third in the Great Voltiguer and so he also fits the St Leger trend. The Godolphin horse is 16/1 to win the St Leger.

After his Great Voltigeur victory, trainer Sir Michael Stoute revealed that whether he should supplement Telescope for the St Leger is not something that he had previously thought about.

It is not cut and dry that the additional 2f is something that will suit him, but given the supplement fee is approximately half of the Great Voltigeur winning pot, the decision could be a positive one.
