Arsenal not outright favourites to make most deadline-day signings

Published:

Given that Arsenal and Manchester United have been particularly quiet in the summer transfer window thus far, it would be easy to anticipate that they will be the busiest on the final day trying to find some last-minute bargains.

Arsenal understandably lead the market to make the most deadline-day transfers at 6/1 and it would be no surprise to see a repeat of the 2011/12 window, which saw Per Mertesacker, Mikel Arteta, Andre Santos and Park Chu-Young all arrive at the Emirates.

Juan Mata and Mesut Ozil are among the bigger names linked this time around, while young German Julian Draxler and Palermo goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano seem more plausible.

Man Utd are 8/1 to bring in the most new faces on the closing day and this may actually prove a better bet than the Gunners.

A new left-back and at least one midfielder seem fairly likely, with any of Leighton Baines, Marouane Fellaini, Ander Herrera or Ozil real possibilities.

Leading the betting with Arsenal at 6/1 are Crystal Palace and with loan deals included in the number of signings, this could be significant to their chances.

Despite beating Sunderland, Palace’s squad still looks a little light for the Premier League and Ian Holloway must be thinking of making a couple of new additions.

His Blackpool team previously were in a somewhat similar position and Holloway opted for two deadline-day signings in Matt Phillips and DJ Campbell.

Further down the betting, Fulham brought in three new faces last summer and have money to spend this time around.

Their start to the season has not been highly inspiring with one win in three league outings and penalties required to knock Burton out of the Capital One Cup and so 25/1 that they make the most deadline-day recruits is a price worthy of a second look.
