Dialled-in Nadal to sweep Robredo aside in US Open quarters
Fresh from tipping a three-out-of-four success in US Open fourth round ties, which included a 3/1 triumph on a four-set win for Andy Murray, we serve up some more bets for the first two men’s quarter finals.
World number four Ferrer has become a feature in the latter stages of Grand Slams in recent seasons and is attempting to make it a hat-trick of semi-final appearances at Flushing Meadows, following on from 2007 and 2012.
Meanwhile, his French opponent is making his first ever US Open quarter-final appearance, having never breached the fourth round in eight previous attempts.
Looking at the head-to-head record there is only one winner in the offing here though and that’s the Spaniard at 2/5, who leads it 8-1, with five of those victories arriving on this surface.
However, if their last encounter is anything to go by – at this tournament last year in the fourth round – as well as the tenacity Gasquet displayed in beating the equally explosive Milos Raonic, then there’s a good chance this one will be close.
Both their last two encounters have produced a tie break while that fourth-round tie also produced a 7-5, so 3-1 to Ferrer at 5/2 is suitably punt-worthy also.
At first glance, Robredo’s straight-sets victory over Roger Federer to set up this last-eight date with Nadal makes the Spaniard prime upset territory against his compatriot, but guess again.
Not only did Federer press the self destruct button against Robredo, Rafa is by far the most in-form player in New York, as well as having enjoyed the most prolific year on the men’s tour as well.
Nadal takes the career meetings 6-0 over his countryman to date and has won nine tournaments in 2013, including recent triumphs in Montreal and Cincinnati on the hard stuff.
The number two seed is a man on a mission having missed this Major through injury last season and scarily for Robredo has only dropped one set from his four matches, while Rafa’s yet to drop his serve in that time either.
With these stark stats in mind, the 5/6 on under 29.5 games to be played in the match could be worth exploiting, while 7/4 on dialled-in Rafa to serve the most aces at 7/4 is also appealing.
