Ladbrokes’ 6/4 on Federer’s retirement is the pick of the prices

| 03.09.2013

In light of Roger Federer’s latest shock exit from a Grand Slam at the US Open, Ladbrokes are offering some juicy prices on when the great man will hang up his racket.

Although Federer has endured one other season since 2003 in which he didn’t win at least one of tennis’ four Majors, 2013 has felt like a struggle from start to finish for the Swiss legend.

After nearly a seven-year period of domination, the consensus is that the 32-year-old’s star has faded and with the word retirement beginning to enter people’s minds, Ladbrokes are offering 6/4 that’s what he’ll do at some point next year.

If this season has been anything to go by, then this seems like a price worth jumping on.

In the last three seasons Fed’s decline has appeared to gather pace, with just one Wimbledon title – achieved last year – to show for his efforts in the Grand Slams, when winning three-out-of-four had become the norm back in the mid noughties.

His latest ignominious straight-sets defeat in the fourth round of the US Open to Tommy Robredo – adding to his shock second-round exit at Wimbledon and disappointing quarter-final failure at the French – only lends weight to the argument he will begin to consider the ‘big R’.

Meanwhile, it’s now 10/1 with Ladbrokes that Federer calls time on his illustrious career before the end of 2013, though this feels a little premature.

The Swiss was still extremely defiant after his Wimbledon exit to little-known Sergiy Stakhovsky, claiming he still had ‘plans to play for many years to come’.

Nevertheless, the gulf between himself and the likes of the world’s top two players Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray will only increase again next season and there’s only so much he’ll be able to take.

It’s also heavily odds-on at 1/7 Federer ends his career stuck on 17 Majors, but for optimistic fans it’s a 4/1 shot he adds at least one more to his tally.
