Newcastle to offload Obertan on Nottingham Forest

| 12.09.2013

After failing with several late bids for Wolves winger Bakary Sako, Nottingham Forest could try and push through a season-long loan move for Newcastle winger Gabriel Obertan.

Obertan joined Newcastle from Manchester United for around £3m two years ago, but has been unable to establish himself as a first-team player at St James’ Park.

The 24-year-old was linked with a loan move last month, but one stumbling block could be Newcastle’s lack of incomings which might make Alan Pardew loath to loan out a senior player.

Following their disappointing summer, Newcastle are 7/1 to be relegated this season.

Despite a strong start to their Championship campaign, Forest manager Billy Davies remains keen to add a pacy winger to his squad after missing out on Sako.

Obertan made 14 league appearances for Newcastle last season, but completed 90 minutes on only one occasion – the 7-3 loss away at Arsenal.

The Frenchman finished the campaign with one goal and three assists from 24 matches in all competitions. In total at Newcastle Obertan has played 49 matches, and scored twice.

Able to play on either wing, the Frenchman could benefit from stepping down a division into a Forest team expected to challenge for promotion this season.

Forest lie fourth in the table with 10 points having won their first three matches of the term, but lost their last game before the international break away at promotion rivals Wigan.

They also sold midfielder Adlene Guedioura to Crystal Palace very late on deadline day, and could target Chelsea’s Nathaniel Chalobah on loan as a possible replacement.

Davies’ side are 9/4 to go up this season, and 7/1 to win the Championship.
