Rhodes and Deeney worth swerving as Championship top scorer

The race to be the Championship’s top scorer is firmly under way, but there is one factor that should definitely be considered when choosing where to place your faith.

After netting 29 Championship goals for a Blackburn side which struggled for a large proportion of last season, it’s no surprise to see Jordan Rhodes placed among the favourites to go scoop the top scorer accolade in 2013/14.

The Scotland international has already bagged four league goals for Rovers in the early stages of the campaign and is currently priced as one of a trio of frontrunners in the betting at 6/1 with Ladbrokes.

Alongside Rhodes at the head of the betting is Watford’s Troy Deeney, who is one goal ahead, while Brighton’s Argentine import Leonardo Ulloa has hit the ground running with four league strikes to his name also.

Having finished the last campaign with 19 goals for the Hornets himself, it’s also unsurprising to see Deeney named as one of the leading contenders.

However, one thing punters may wish to be wary of is the interest both Deeney and Rhodes have already attracted from Premier League clubs, which could end up resulting in a January move.

Hull, Fulham and Newcastle have all sniffed around Rhodes this summer, while Tottenham’s interest in Deeney came as something of a surprise, but indicated how highly the 25-year-old is being rated by Prem bosses.

This is exactly what happened last season with Luciano Becchio of Leeds, who was looking like he would be challenging all the way in this market, having scored 15 Championship goals by New Year’s Day, before being plucked by Norwich in January 2013.

Therefore this makes the likes of Ulloa, 12/1-shot duo Adam Le Fondre and current pace-setter James Vaughan tempting picks also.
