Saints and Sunderland to profit from Spurs’ heavy spending

| 02.09.2013

The raft of new midfielders that have arrived at Tottenham in the transfer window is not ideal news for the likes of Aaron Lennon and Gylfi Sigurdsson and it would be no surprise to see either leave on deadline day.

It is Southampton that are being linked with Lennon, where he could be seen as a squad replacement for Jason Puncheon.

Lennon’s speed would be a big asset to Southampton on the counter attack and he could prove a regular source of assists to Rickie Lambert if sealing a switch to St Mary’s.

There is a strong argument that he is now behind both Erik Lamela and Andros Townsend for the starting role on the right side of the Spurs midfield.

Meanwhile, Sigurdsson may have been shuffled even further back in the line for his preferred attacking central midfield role and this has alerted Paolo Di Canio.

Sunderland are already on the brink of bringing in Fabio Borini as another attacking option and with Stephane Sessegnon possibly departing the Stadium of Light for West Brom, there is some space for additional creativity in Di Canio’s ranks.

Sigurdsson provides an obvious goal threat from midfield and showed previously at Swansea that he can make an impact when profiting from a regular run of games.

If he is to join Sunderland, then it is virtually guaranteed to be on loan.

Sunderland are 4/1 to finish in the top half of the Premier League this season, but currently find themselves in the bottom three, largely because no other club in the top-flight have conceded more than them thus far.
