Chelsea and Man City on alert over Matuidi’s contract situation
Published:PSG midfielder Blaise Matuidi is reportedly holding out for a significant pay rise in Paris, though if the 26-year-old is not granted his wish by the French champions, he could either leave in January or simply run his current contract down until the end of the season.
All-action PSG and France midfielder Matuidi is apparently locked in talks with the Parisian outfit as he attempts to seek improved terms on a new contract, which would potentially tie him to the club until 2018.
However, the fact that these negotiations are being conducted so late in the day has pricked the ears of a few Premier League clubs as the January transfer window fast approaches.
And wherever there is an issue of money involved, it’s no surprise to see English football’s two financial powerhouses and two most fancied teams for the title, in Chelsea (23/10) and Manchester City (17/10), thrust into the frame.
If Matuidi is refused his new demands then the French club would be left with a few different choices.
They could simply let him leave in January for a cut-price, let his contract run down and make the most of his services until the summer, or take up the best-of-both worlds solution of agreeing to sell him in January, but keeping him until the end of the current campaign.
In the more probable scenario of PSG going for the third option, a pre-contract agreement could be signed with another club as early as January 1st.
The question then would be; which of Chelsea and City would be prepared to offer Matuidi the most moolah in wages, bonuses and signing on fees?
Arguably, it is Chelsea who could best do with cover in the engine room, with Frank Lampard possibly in his last season at Stamford Bridge and, only really Ramires and John Obi Mikel as other certified centre-midfielders on the books.
