Three options Tottenham could try to score more goals
Published:Even though Spurs were given a thrashing by West Ham at White Hart Lane in their last match, they have made a steady start to life without Gareth Bale, winning four of their seven league games.
Their odds to finish in the top four have come in to 6/4, while they are 14/1 to mount an unlikely title challenge.
The main concern for Andre Villas-Boas is their lack of goals, with his side managing just six goals in their seven league games, and the Portuguese manager should consider tinkering with his formation to bolster his attacking threat.
Switching to three at the back
Villas-Boas opted to replace Roberto Soldado with Jermain Defoe in Spurs’ last league match, but he could play both by switching to a 3-5-2 system.
They could retain the same midfield three of Paulinho, Mousa Dembele and Christian Eriksen, and if they were really looking to beef up their attacking options their wide forwards could play as a wing-back, as Liverpool did with Raheem Sterling against Crystal Palace.
Adding Lewis Holtby to the formation
Instead of playing two strikers, Spurs could try and improve the supply line to their lone forward by replacing Gylfi Sigurdsson with Lewis Holtby.
The German has been in inspired form in the Europa League and Capital One Cup, has played in the position before at Schalke, and could dovetail nicely both with a striker and Eriksen.
The return of Emmanuel Adebayor
The Togolese striker is back in first-team training after a disrupted summer and despite the many questions about his commitment to Spurs, Villas-Boas should try and integrate him back into the team.
His physical presence means that he provides something extra to Soldado and Defoe and given that he is no slouch on the ball, Adebayor could perhaps play on the left-side of Spurs attack, where he often drifted last season to allow Gareth Bale the room to excel in the centre.
