ATP World Tour Finals draw favours Ferrer for semi-final spot
Published:David Ferrer’s prospects of making the final four at the ATP World Tour Finals this week are looking healthy after the Spaniard benefitted from a favourable draw.
The 31-year-old may still be looking for his first Grand Slam success, but at 11/10 to reach the semi-finals he’s certainly not one to be sniffed at.
In the next few days he faces matches against Rafael Nadal, Tomas Berdych and Stanislas Wawrinka and, despite the presence of the world number one, there is every reason to think he can progress with ease at the O2.
Ferrer has won each of his last three meetings with Berdych, with his most recent victory against the Czech star coming at last week’s Paris Masters.
He boasts a similarly dominant record against Wawrinka, with the French Open finalist winning seven of the eleven matches between the pair.
There is even some room for optimism with regards his prospects against Nadal, after Ferrer claimed a rare 2-0 victory in their previous meeting in Paris to end a two-year wait to record a victory over the US Open winner.
The Alicante-born star is coming off the back of a memorable year, having reached the last eight in three of the four Grand Slams and will also be desperate to end the season on a high.
Despite this, the Spaniard remains something of an outside shot to win the entire competition at odds of 20/1 given the presence of big-hitters like Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Juan Martin Del Potro in the other group.
But there is every reason to think he will remain in the mix come the conclusion of the group matches.
Ferrer begins his tournament with something approaching a baptism of fire against Nadal, but with memories of his Paris win still fresh in the mind, a surprise victory here could set the veteran Spaniard up nicely for the week ahead.
