Rubin v Wigan: Fortress Kazan makes home win to nil the bet

Published:

Championship Wigan deserve enormous credit for halting Rubin’s extensive winning run of nine games in Europe, by earning a point in the Europa League at the DW Stadium on matchday three.

However, given the Russians are so strong at home and Wigan’s serious lack of away goals this season, the English side look set for a tough night in Kazan.

Wigan have more than held their own so far in this group so far, where that point against Rubin ensured they remain second behind the Russians on five and seven points respectively.

Nevertheless, as Group D’s bottom side Zulte Waregem found out to their peril when losing 4-0 on matchday two, Kubin relish European nights at the Centralniy Stadion.

Given the relative inexperience in continental competition of many of the Latics’ travelling contingent, the 4/9 on offer for the home win should not be baulked at.

Furthermore, all four European visitors to Rubin this season (including qualifying games) have left as losers and worse still, without registering a goal either.

And fans of Wigan will know only too well how their team has toiled on the road this season through an absolute drought of goals, making the Kubin win to nil at 6/5 as attractive as one of Russia’s top supermodels.

Amazingly, since doling out Barnsley an opening-day 4-0 pummelling in the Championship, the Latics have failed to register a single away goal in seven games in all competitions.

So, all the ingredients point towards another European clean sheet for Rubin too, priced at 10/11 with Ladbrokes.

Meanwhile, if Wigan fail to score as predicted, then given the tight nature of the first meeting, it might well be worth exposing the 1-0 or 2-0 to Rubin in the coupled correct score market at 12/5.
